    City of Greensboro Creek Week Events

    **NOTE: Registration is required for all events below. The deadline to sign up is noon on the business day (M-F) before the event. All events are FREE and open to ages 10+ (with parent supervision), with the exception of Green Girls, a drop-off middle school-age girls only program.

      Saturday, June 21, 10 am – 12 pm, Rehobeth Wetland Program and Cleanup

      Location: Rehobeth Wetland, Greensboro, NC | For ages 10+ with parent supervision.

      »» The Rehobeth Wetland is approximately 36 acres of land, including the stream channel and the adjacent floodplain of the South Buffalo Creek, and a developed in-stream wetland pollution control facility. Join the City of Greensboro’s Stormwater Operations Supervisor, Kenny Taylor, as he takes a deep dive into the project. The talk will be followed by a Wetland Cleanup where you can explore the area and see the effectiveness of the wetland. *

      *All supplies will be provided. Closed-toed shoes and long pants are required; boots or galoshes are encouraged! Bring a hat, sunscreen, bug spray and, water if needed.

       

      Monday, June 23, 10 - 11:30 am, Where Does Your Recycling Go? – Recycling Center Tour

      Location: Republic MRF, Greensboro, NC | For ages 18+

      Must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. If you have a pacemaker please consult your doctor before arriving.


      Monday, June 23, 6 – 7 pm, Greensboro Arboretum Stream Restoration Walk and Talk

      Location: North Buffalo Creek, Greensboro, NC | For ages 10+ with parent supervision. 

      »» The Greensboro Arboretum, includes a section of North Buffalo Creek that was recently restored. Join the City of Greensboro’s Stormwater staff member, Blake Strumbel, as he takes a stroll through the project's history, primary design components, and its impacts. We will walk through the key features of the project, totaling just over ¾ of a mile. After the talk, please feel free to wander the park until 8 pm.*

      *Closed-toed shoes are encouraged! Bring a reusable water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and bug spray if needed.


      Tuesday, June 24, 6 – 7 pm, Revolution Mill Stream Restoration Walk and Talk

      Location: North Buffalo Creek, Greensboro, NC | Free. For all ages with parent supervision. 

      »» Join us for an evening at Revolution Mill as we start with a talk about the history of the site and urban streams then walk around to see the stream restoration project recently completed and the benefits it has had in the community. Dr. Praskievicz from UNCG as well as Haley Bock and Alex Ashton from Piedmont Conservation Council will share insights into the stream restoration components of the project. This site includes portions of the North Buffalo Greenway.

      *Closed toed shoes are encouraged! Bring a reusable water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and bug spray if needed.

      EVENT CANCELLED: College Branch Stream Restoration Walk and Talk

      Location: College Branch Stream Greensboro, NC

      »» Join us for an evening at College Branch, as we walk the stream and talk about the recent restoration project. We will be discussing and answering questions regarding stream bank restoration, native planting and insights to some of Piedmont Conservation Council projects.*

      Thursday, June 26, 1 – 3 pm, Mitchell Water Treatment Plant Tour

      Location: Mitchell Water Treatment Plant, Greensboro, NC | For ages 10+ with parent supervision.

      »» Greensboro depends upon three surface water sources to supply our water: Lake Townsend, Lake Brandt, and Lake Higgins. These lakes are located within a protected watershed in northern Guilford County in the upper Cape Fear River Basin. When full, Greensboro’s reservoirs hold about eight billion gallons of water. Join us to learn more about the water treatment process!

      *Close-toed shoes and pants are required. If necessary, bring a reusable water bottle, hat, and sunscreen.

    • Green Girls is a free drop-off program that introduces middle school-age girls to a possible career in science and research through hands-on activities and learning (indoor and outdoor). All events are free and will be held from 1:00 – 5:00 pm! For all Green Girls lessons, please wear closed-toed shoes that you are comfortable getting wet in and bring a reusable water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and bug spray if needed.

      Monday, June 23, 1-5 pm - Pollution Patrol: Fires, Forecasts, and the Science of Clean Air - hosted by Triad Air Awareness and Guilford County Environmental Services 

      Location: Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch, Greensboro, NC

      »» Join us for a lesson on air quality issues in North Carolina, including the environmental and human health effects of burning trash and wildfires. Participants will also learn about air quality monitoring and forecasting, and how studying local lichen populations can teach us about the health of our air. We will also take a short hike around Price Park.

       

      Tuesday, June 24, 1-5 pm - Water Quality in My City - hosted by Guilford County Planning and Development Watershed Section and Soil and Water Conservation

      Location: Bog Garden, Greensboro, NC

      »» Students will explore the physical properties of water, learn more about what causes water pollution, and see how environmental scientists are working to protect our aquatic ecosystems.


      Wednesday, June 25, 1-5 pm - Soil Sisters - hosted by the City of Greensboro Office of Sustainability and Resilience

      Location: Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch, Greensboro, NC

      »» Explore soil and ecosystems through art and electronics. Activities include building a bug hotel and a soil moisture indicator.

       

      Thursday, June 26, 1-5 pm - Reimagine Waste and Recycling - hosted by the City of Greensboro Solid Waste and Recycling

      Location: White Street Landfill, Greensboro, NC

      »» Students will explore the hidden world of waste management with a guided tour of a working (and unexpectedly scenic) landfill. They'll learn how recycling operates in Greensboro, uncover easy ways to reduce waste in their daily lives, and apply their knowledge by designing their own eco-friendly park.

       

      Friday, June 27, 1-5 pm - Healthy Ecosystems: Dragonflies as Indicator Species- hosted by the City of Greensboro Water Resources

      Location: Bur-Mil Park, Greensboro, NC

      »» Join us as we dive into ecosystems, indicator species and how dragonflies indicate ecosystem health, observe them in their natural habitat, and learn about their roles within the ecosystem.

      Green Girls Program Dates

      Green Girls is a free drop-off program that introduces middle school-age girls to a possible career in science and research through hands-on activities and learning (indoor and outdoor). All participants need to be prepared to stay the entire duration of the program. See below for the event schedule and registration. All events are free and will be held from 1:00 – 5:00 pm! For all Green Girls lessons, please wear closed-toed shoes that you are comfortable getting wet in and bring a reusable water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and bug spray if needed.
    • **All participants for Stream and City Facility Tour Programs must complete the Liability Waiver Online Form prior to each event. Participants under 18 must have their guardian complete the form.**
    • **All participants for Green Girls must have their guardian complete the Liability Waiver Online Form prior to each event, for each date.**
